You have seen it happen. You treat one area and something changes somewhere else entirely. The horse drops its head, releases through the shoulder, or softens at the poll. You know the medkey is doing something. This course explains what that something is.

Key Equine Anatomy teaches anatomy not as a memorisation exercise but as a regulatory map. Every structure covered – every bone, joint, muscle, and fascial line – is taught through one lens only: how does it shape the horse’s nervous system response, and what does that mean for where and how you treat?

This is not a veterinary anatomy course. It is not a biomechanics lecture series. It is the anatomical knowledge a key equine therapist actually needs; organised around the nervous system, explained through observable feedback, and built entirely around how the medkey interacts with a living, reactive horse.

Completion of the Key Equine Basic Course is required before enrolling in this course.

Module 1 – 5 Lessons

Introduction to Key Equine Anatomy

The foundational premise: the horse is not a mechanical system with parts to fix. It is a regulatory animal that adapts continuously to load, threat, and environment. Anatomy is introduced here as a living system, not a diagram to memorise. You are introduced to the four tissue types; skeleton, joints, muscle, and fascia – and what each one tells you as a key equine therapist.

Module 2 – 6 lessons

The Regulatory Map of the Horse

Horses are prey animals governed by a hyper-vigilant nervous system. A low-level sympathetic state is their default, not the exception. This module maps the autonomic nervous system across the horse’s body, showing where the regulatory access points are concentrated and why treating certain zones consistently produces a calm, settled response.

Module 3 – 6 lessons

The Spine as Master Regulator

The spine is not just a structural column. It is the primary communication highway of the nervous system. This module covers the three paravertebral pathways and what they govern, why spinal treatment produces whole-body effects, and how to read postural change along the spine as live feedback during a session.

Module 4 – 6 lessons

Thoracic Sling & Front-End Regulation

The horse carries roughly 60% of its weight through the front end, yet the forelimb has no bony attachment to the spine. The thoracic sling suspends the thorax between the forelimbs and is one of the most common sites of compensatory tension. This module covers the anatomy of the sling, what restriction looks like in a working horse, and why front-end treatment has such a direct effect on the whole horse’s regulatory state.

Module 5 – 6 lessons

Scapular Junction. The Sympathetic Hinge

The scapular region is a convergence zone where the thoracic spine, the forelimb, and major sympathetic nerve pathways all meet. This module explains why the withers and scapular junction are so consistently reactive in horses under load or stress, and how medkey treatment at this zone produces both local release and broader autonomic regulation.

Module 6 – 5 lessons

Lumbosacral & Pelvic Complex

The lumbosacral junction is where the horse generates propulsive power and where chronic tension, pelvic strain, and compensatory holding patterns most often concentrate. This module covers the anatomy of the pelvis and lower back, the structures that govern hind-end function, and why pelvic treatment has such a strong regulatory effect on the whole horse.

Module 7 – 6 lessons

Posterior Chain: Hamstrings & Anchors

The posterior chain connects the pelvis to the hock and governs how the hind limb loads, propels, and recovers. Restrictions here are common in performance horses and often misread as hind-limb stiffness or reluctance. This module covers the key structures, their fascial connections, and how to identify and address posterior chain tension using the medkey.

Module 8 – 6 lessons

Cranial Axis, Vagal Gate & Integration

The poll and occiput form the primary parasympathetic entry point in the horse, the vagal gate. Treatment here consistently produces the most visible whole-body regulation response: head drop, lower lip release, eye softening, slowed breathing. This final module covers the anatomy of the cranial axis, why it is the most powerful regulatory zone in the horse’s body, and how everything in this course integrates into a complete, feedback-led clinical approach. Competency assessment is completed at the end of this module.

You will not be asked to memorise origin, insertion, and action. You will be asked to understand why a horse stuck in sympathetic dominance cannot respond to structural treatment the way a regulated horse can, and what to do about it.
